Wild at Heart | New Men’s Study Starting on 12 January 2017

41lpyntabsl-_sx326_bo1204203200_I mentioned on the last Lord’s Day that we will be starting a new men’s study beginning on 12 January 2017. Logistics are pretty simple, and I’ve designed the study for men who can be available mid-evenings during the week.  I provide the material, and we meet on Thursdays at 235 West Main Street, № 104 (my office) at 8:30 PM. As in the past, we will be opening a video conferencing link for men who are unable to attend in person, but who have access to the internet and a webcam.  The video conference also allows men to join by just phone as well.

The book that we are using for this 20-ish-week study is Wild at Heart by John Eldredge.  I characterized the author as controversial in my announcements the other day, so I felt as if I should let interested men know why.

Eldredge is a straight-forward writer who, while making many allusions to the Scriptures, assumes the reader has been well-taught. Some have criticized Eldredge for taking a bit of a fairy tale approach to manhood. See this recent interview with Eldredge by Religion News Service.

Many have found the book provocative and useful. Our objective is to get men to reflect thoughtfully on the Scriptures so that they can apply Gospel-centered principles to their lives to glorify Christ.

Where I’ve found either allusions or flat out references to the Scriptures in the book, we will be studying those passages in parallel to get the context.

If anyone needs more information or would like to discuss the study, please leave a comment below.

The Bible in One Year | Some Reading Plans for You

Reading the Bible the whole way through is an edifying experience for the Christian.  The Bible contains the revealed will of God.  It contains wisdom.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV) tells us:

16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Here are two strong reading plans for the Bible in One Year.

  1.  The Navigators published this plan in 1983.  It goes through each of four sections of  the Bible in order:  History then the Prophets, Wisdom, the Letters, and the  Gospels.  It spans 25 days per month, giving you room to wiggle a little.
  2.  Mark Roberts published this plan.  It is dated for 2016 but can be used again by      following the week numbers.  Roberts publishes a new plan annually.. It is in  chronological order and spans five days a week.  The chronology of the Scriptures    is well-studied, but we can’t vouch for the order given here.   That caveat aside, this  plan will get you through the Bible in one year and will offer you some historical  perspectives that reading it straight through might not.

If you’d like a reading partner, let an elder know.

Lord’s Day Morning Sermon for 11.06.2016 | Rev John Orlando, Psalm 56

Pioneer welcomed Rev John Orlando – interim pastor at Faith PCA in Malvern, PA, and active church planter – for worship this morning.  We did a blog post on John’s call to plant a church for the military and English-speakers near the USAF base in Aviano, Italy, earlier this year. John led adult Sunday School and preached a poignant sermon on Psalm 56.  Pioneer wants to thank John for his message. Listen to his message here:
