A Day of Prayer and Fasting | Part Two

“Yet even now,” declares the Lord,
return to me with all your heart,
with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
and rend your hearts and not your garments.
Return to the Lord your God,
for he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love;
and he relents over disaster.
Who knows whether he will not turn and relent,
and leave a blessing behind him,
a grain offering and a drink offering
for the Lord your God?
Blow the trumpet in Zion;
consecrate a fast;
call a solemn assembly;
gather the people.
Consecrate the congregation;
assemble the elders;
gather the children,
even nursing infants.
Let the bridegroom leave his room,
and the bride her chamber.
Between the vestibule and the altar
let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep
and say, “Spare your people, O Lord,
and make not your heritage a reproach,
a byword among the nations.
Why should they say among the peoples,
‘Where is their God?’

Joel 2:12-17

Day of Prayer and Fasting | 19 June 2017

“And, when you fast…But, when you fast…”  Matthew 6:16 and 17

Our Lord, Jesus, expected His people to pray and fast.  In this passage in Matthew 6, Jesus uses the same phrase eight times: “…when you…” He lets us know that He expects us to give (v. 2 and v. 3), to pray (v.5,6,7,9 [..pray then…]), and to fast (v.16 and v.17).

Fasting isn’t something that we hear about often in the modern church, but over the centuries, it was an integral part of prayer in the church.   The Scriptures give us clear insight into what, why and how to fast.

What is Fasting?

Fasting is abstaining from food.  If you can’t abstain from all food or from food at all, fasting can be abstaining from anything that will cause you to “hunger”.  When you hunger, you are reminded of the purpose of the fast, the “why”. A fast is voluntary.  Only you can decide if and how you will fast.

Why: the purpose of the fast?

In most cases, fasting is for us to strengthen our prayer.  We aren’t changing God’s mind.  Prayer and fasting are spiritual disciplines that help our mind to be renewed.  As it is renewed, we are able to discern the will of God – His good, acceptable and perfect will.

How to fast…

Fasts can be full (all food) or partial (some foods).  Fasts can last hours or days or longer.  Fasts can involve abstaining from other things – like TV or Facebook – for a time.  Each time we desire to engage in those things, we are reminded of why we are abstaining.

Jesus instruction in Matthew 6 is clear:  when you fast:

  1. Do not look gloomy
  2. anoint your head
  3. wash your face
  4. let your Father in heaven see your fasting in secret

Fasting today…

Today, Pioneer is participating in a day of fasting and prayer for several individuals in our midst who are enduring difficult illnesses.  We have been praying steadfastly for them.  Today, we add a congregational fast to strengthen our prayers.

We started our fast early this morning and will end it at 6 PM tonight.  We are gathering at Pioneer Church at 6 PM to pray together.

If you are praying today, remember these people in your prayers:

Judah Pope (age 5) who is continually having seizures and is currently in a medically induced coma to reduce seizure activity and for his parents, Timotheus and Kendra Pope and his family.

Jack Kinneer and for his wife Janice and their family.

Karen Andrews and for her husband, Sam and their family.

Bill Kennedy and for his wife, Gloria.

We note all of this for instruction and for edification – we have no idea who among us is fasting today.

If you are, be encouraged.  Check back this afternoon for more encouragement.

Grace and peace!
